November
11, 2002 -- The Libertarian
Alliance awarded to Pierre Lemieux its 2002 "Liberty in Action"
International Award. This distinciton
is awarded annually to "an individual whose actions have contributed
to the struggle for freedom and individual rights."
The text of the award read: "Pierre
Lemieux Academic, Author, Journalist and Activist in the Struggle For
Liberty. Mario Vargas Llosa once declared that "In those countries where
freedom did not exist, courageous intellectuals have fought for it.
But in western countries where genuine freedom exists, the intellectuals
have hardly raised a finger to defend it.". A notable exception is Pierre
Lemieux. As an academic he has penned important works on classical liberalism,
individual sovereignty and the theory of anarcho-capitalism. But his
work has not remained merely academic. As an organiser of activist bodies,
of conferences and as a broadcaster and prolific journalist he has established
himself as a courageous and doughty voice for individual liberty. In
his impassioned and multilingual journalism in Canada, France and America
he has confronted not merely the countless economic threats to liberty,
but the new socialisms of health fascism, medical paternalism and socialised
medicine, and the threats to the right to bear arms. We are pleased
to recognise in this Award an outstanding comrade in the struggle, in
both theory and practice, for the free society."
The award was presented by Chris Tame, president
of the Libertarian Alliance, and accepted by Sarah
Lawrence on behalf of Pierre Lemieux.
